Why I don’t buy into this instant lead generation stuff

I’ve had quite a few requests for reviews on various ‘lead generation systems’. These are shouty sales promotions that claim to get thousands of customers to your website or sales page automatically... at the push of a button.
(I always sigh when anything is considered “push of a button”. The launch of the space shuttle is probably “push of a button”, but it doesn’t mean going to space is easy.)
Anyway, the idea is posited along the lines of “plug in this robot and suck thousands of customers from google’.
If you’ve got a website, email newsletter, or any kind of sales site, this is an immensely attractive proposition.
Imagine... you set up a sales page for a Click Bank product, resale rights product, or MLM proposition. You switch on some software, and suddenly you’re notching up sales and lads by sitting back and doing nothing,
But before you reach into your pocket, beware...
I don't buy into these automated instant lead generation systems. You can apply a system to lead generation, but a lot of these things are sold by affiliate marketers to other affiliate marketers who sell them to other affiliate marketers.
The problem is, you could get 1,000 leads in a day – but are they buyers for your marketing niche?
I once had a list of 20,000 leads for a health product. When I offered a product to this list, it turns out there was barely anyone on there who would pay for it. They were leads, but not the right kind of leads.
I could be wrong about all this of course, or a bit old fashioned. But in my experience, the best ways to generate customers/readers/leads is to have:
· A constantly uploaded and optimised website...
· Free reports and sign-up incentives...
· Decent customer exchanges with other newsletters and websites
· Good free email content – and definitely an email newsletter that offers MORE than just sales pitches.
· Hot products you can sell into other people's customer bases and onto other people’s websites
· Classified ads (online and offline)
· Low price products you can use to scoop up customers to whom you can up-sell to more profitable products.
These are the techniques I use, as do Canonbury, Agora, Streetwise, and other publishers.
It's tempting to think there's a magic automated shortcut but I don't think there's any replacement for spontaneous, intelligent, old fashioned marketing nouce!
