From novice to success in 2 years
By Dan Thorley
Back in 2007 I was a complete internet novice. Not only had I never been online before, I didn’t even know how to switch on a computer, oh how times change. Actually one of the first websites I came across that gave independent reviews and honest advice was Charlie Wrights Adventures In The Biz Op Jungle. If only I had stumbled across it a little sooner.
OK, I’ll just back peddle a bit....
My company Penthouse Marketing didn’t start until early 2009. The years before that were filled with trial and error, ranging from spread betting to buying shares, and sports betting to property. One of my ventures on the internet, spread betting was a complete disaster. I lost almost everything (around £30,000) ouch!
This left me with a tough decision, should I cut my losses and look for full time employment or should I regroup and push onward with my dream of financial independence? I had some shares I could use to fund my venture so I decided to cash them in. Trouble was they were in some of the worst sectors of the economy when the credit crunch was in full swing. So my original £10,000 invested was only now worth a paltry £1000.
So with £1000 capital and a lot of determination I bought a direct mail course. It looked fantastic and I knew I had made the right decision. Over the course of the next 6 months I studied and worked hard and learnt how to write sales copy, marketing techniques, re-branding of products and preparing everything I needed for the grand launch of my new business.
How much! Are you mad?
My websites cost me around £1200 each in total to set up from scratch and I had two of them! I literally cut all my personal living expenses down to just the bare essentials, and any spare cash I ploughed into the business. It had cost me pretty much everything I owned, but hey it was an investment, right?
Unfortunately it didn’t quite go the way I planned, the launch date came and went and I didn’t manage to sell one single product. In fact two days before my planned launch my appendix burst which set me back another 6 weeks. At that point I was so low and broke I took a part time job stacking shelves in a local supermarket and reinvested my wages into the business.
The costs were so much higher than I imagined. Classified ads were £150 a pop which didn’t bring sales. With all my other costs including AdWords, a virtual office address, broadcast software and a load of other bits and pieces that I really didn’t need, my monthly running costs was a staggering £1500. I very nearly rented a list of 2000 names for a direct mail campaign; this would have cost me another £800 including p + p. luckily (didn’t feel like it at the time) I couldn’t scrape the money together so decided against that idea.
The creation of “Business from the Kitchen Table”
It was clear at this point that if I wanted this venture to be a success, I needed to revolutionize my whole business concept. The first key decision I made was to change the core of the business from a direct mail company to an internet marketing company instead. That’s when I bought Charlie’s The Inbox Tycoon.
This key change meant that instead of sending out a physical brochure through the post to sell directly, I would concentrate on building an email list of subscribers via a squeeze page that offered a complementary report and a weekly e-letter. This was to build rapport and trust with my subscribers rather than a direct sell approach.
Considering the expense this venture had already cost me, a fundamental change in direction now was certainly radical, but if truth be told essential. And on the 11th November 2009 “Business from the Kitchen Table” was created.
