Do you get stuck in this common trap?

Today’s Adventure in the Biz Opp Jungle:

‘In which Charlie explains the negative feedback loop that can turn into a business nightmare, and how to escape from this common trap, PLUS new updates and reviews revealed.’

Hi

I don’t know if you’ve ever read any books by Thomas Hardy...

It might surprise you that I have. See, I’ve always been a bit of a book geek. As a greasy teenager I was obsessed with his doomed tales of thwarted ambition.

In fact, as a tribute I’m writing this in a top hat, with my wife who is also my cousin, surrounded by gap-toothed illegitimate children.

Anyway, Hardy liked to do this writer’s trick where a character’s mood would be reflected in the environment.

For instance, in times of desperate misery, a character would walk across a crow-laden muddy field in a thunderstorm. And in times of hope, the flowers would come out. That sort of thing.

Same has been happening to me this week...

My ongoing dispute with my freeholder reached a crescendo on Monday when his decorator-stooge painted my windows shut, ripped the insulation seal off the front door, and painted the door a sickly grey – the colour of hospital ward swing doors. (It was previously an elegant gloss black.)

Then on Monday morning he sent me a demand £250 to pay for the botch job.

As I sat down with a glass of wine and read the demand notice in fury, the electrics suddenly blew in the house. All the main lights just flickered off and wouldn’t come on again.

Suddenly, those darned fruit flies were back. A swarm of them coming in off the rotten apples that have fallen from the tree in my garden.

They whizzed round my head as I sat there, stewing in my own despair. I reached to pick up my wine only to see it was full of fly corpses.

I panicked.

What was happening? Why had everything gone so dark? Was any of this real?

Or was this a weird manifestation of my mood?

Well, this is what I wanted to warn you about today.

Because if you’ve ever got really angry about a shoddy biz opp, a scam, a failed money back guarantee.... or if you’ve simply FAILED to achieve something you set out to do.... then you’ve probably fallen into the same trap as me. And it can cause serious setbacks in your ambitions.

The dangers of negative feedback loop

What happens is that a negative event creates a negativity mindset. This negative mindset then interprets anything that’s bad in life as worse than it is.

Your brain picks out all the bad things that have happened, and are happening, and edits out the good, the hope, the optimism.

The more negatives you see, the worse you feel... and the worse you feel, the more negatives you see.... and so on, and so forth, until you’re sucked down into a black whirlpool of your own making.

Eventually, you give up on all your goals. And you’re back to square one.

Now if you’re reading this and thinking, “What’s he on about? I never experience this!” then congratulations!

You’re one of life’s optimists and I envy you!

As for me, since Monday, I’ve struggled to muster up enthusiasm for anything. I looked at my life and my business enterprises and thought:

“Actually, this is all nonsense. I’m an idiot. I’m chasing dreams of money like a fool. I’m not a proper writer. Why does anyone bother reading anything? Why shouldn’t I just go to the pub like the old days and mouth of about my plans for world domination, then forget everything the next day? Life was easier when I only talked about stuff and didn’t try to DO it.”

On Wednesday I wrote in my email to you:

“If you don't get into the mindset of somebody who is successful, wealthy and popular... if you can't visualise the things you want out of life... and if you don't truly believe that you can achieve your dreams... then you will NEVER succeed”

But to be honest, I didn’t really believe this at the time.

Instead I thought – EVERYTHING IS RUBBISH. Don’t expect anything out of life. Even when you try hard there’s always some berk ready to ruin everything.

Why bother?

Of course, I was in a negative feedback loop. And there’s only one way out of a trap like this... and take this as advice from a guy who knows... and that’s to DO SOMETHING.

How to escape the trap

When you feel despair and the pull of the black whirlpool, set yourself a small and achievable task. Then and set to it. Plunge right in. Don’t think about anything else until you’ve achieved this minor task.

·         If it’s to set up that website you’ve been meaning to finish – do it.

·         If it was to write that sales email – do it.

·         If it was to read that manual sitting on your shelf – do it.

·         If it was to put that pile of stuff from upstairs onto eBay and make a bit of cash – do it.

As for me, I’ve been plagued with guilt that I’ve not been updating the website properly this year... so caught up am I in various projects.

By Thursday my personal salvation became clear. I’d forget about my freeholder, and the electrics, and the flies, and spend a day cleaning up my website.

It helped!

Afterwards I felt really good. My mood lifted. A decorator came back and painted the door black again. The flies returned to the garden. An electrician sorted the lights out for a surprisingly reasonable price.

And suddenly I realised what I could write about in today’s email.

BINGO! I turned the bad into good. Well, I hope the advice does you some good anyway.

Here are the results of my endeavour...
