On Radio 4 the other day I heard a discussion about drug addiction.
Apparently a pilot scheme has enjoyed remarkable success... stopping many addicts from returning to their vices... and helping them build new lives.
How?
Shopping vouchers.
Every time they turn up and get a ‘clean’ result from their blood tests they get a shopping voucher to spend as they like. And each time they get a consecutive clean result, this amount snowballs.
A successful reformed addict could walk away from the process with £350.
While this sounds a lot of money for we taxpayers to give away (fume fume, shake an angry fist, grrrr grrrr, etc), the argument goes that it will cost a lot more for society to pay for the crime and punishment associated with heavy drug use.
I won’t get into the politics. When it comes to private lives I’m a libertarian and regularly spout views on drugs and wars and other issues that offend more people than they please, so I’ll be quiet on this one.
Anyway, the politics of this issue is not my point...
When I was listening to this Radio discussion while washing up, I got thinking about how it related to biz opp addiction...
What interested me most was the way that the addict perceived the £350.
The expert on the Radio said that if they’ve merely SAVED UP that £350 of their own money by not paying for drugs, it wouldn’t have the same effect. And if they’d just been GIVEN £350 and told to ‘stop taking drugs’ this wouldn’t have worked either.
It was the feeling of earning the money bit-by-bit... the way the money triggered the reward centre of the brain and prompted such a radical change in behaviour... THAT’S what really did it.
You don’t need big riches to motivate someone... but people crave a direct reward for something they’ve achieved, and it needs to be immediate.
And that got me thinking even more...
How £350 could be the end of addiction and the start of a new life
