A new update on this recession-proof opportunity...
Today’s Adventure in the Biz Opp Jungle:
‘In which Charlie doesn’t find geneology humour very funny, updates his review of Roots Detective, with feedback revealed.’
Hi
I didn’t realise there was such a thing as “geneology humour”.
This is where people who spend their time researching family trees tell little jokes about themselves.
One website has the headline:
“QUARANTINED! for Genealogy Fever”
This spoof article describes the symptoms of this killer disease as...
“Notepapers stuffed in pockets and files; heart palpitations at the sight of gravestones and old trunks filled with letters; bloodshot eyes from excessive microfilm exposure; erratic speech patterns punctuated with pilgrims and princes; cold sweat upon the arrival of the mail....INCURABLE!”
Hmmm... “hilarious” if you are a family tree researcher, I guess.
Of course, this crazy humour is directed at obsessives who do that whole “Who do you think you are” type quest you see on telly.
They literally tour the country, weeping at tombstones, pouring through the local census and interviewing elderly folk.
While this is fine, there’s a much smaller scale, and far easier way to do this. It’s a classic little part time business that could make you a stream of extra cash.
None of the hassle. No skills. No physical labour. Just the good old interweb... and this excellent, “tell all” report:
How to set up this genuine part time business
The idea behind Roots Detective is that you use your PC to knock up family trees that are easily sold to order.
The blueprint goes roughly like this:
· You switch on your PC and connect to the Internet...
· You visit a handful of very specific websites that do all the “research” work for you.
· You gather the info into a family tree format using a simple software package.
· You email this file to a printing company who will even take care of delivery for you.
I first recommended this way back in January 2008. The reason I bring it up again here and now in March 2009 is twofold...
First, I’ve had a lot of Biz Opp Junglers asking for really simple business ideas that don’t involve risk, trading, betting, or investing large amounts of outlay.... something totally unaffected by the economic situation, the credit crunch and the wild markets.... something where you can put a bit of effort in and get guaranteed money out again.
Well, Roots Detective ticks ALL those boxes.
Secondly, I’ve been monitoring the feedback on this, and I’m even more confident that I was over a year ago that this is a do-able, user-friendly opportunity.
Here’s a genuine little part time home business that’s good fun to do and always popular.
And yes, there’s good feedback....
Some positive comments on my forum include...
“I've completed one project (and, in the process, met a very interesting guy and his incredible house, which has a room lifted in its entirety from a German WWII ship...), with which he was happy, and I made my very first profit in a business opportunity working for myself. That one project paid for the biz opp, setting up a website, subscribing to the required sites and feeds in order to carry out the research, and even gave me a little profit besides.”
And this is just the beginning of his biz opp adventure!
Another user says:
“I have used it to trace my family tree, and to see if it would work as a home business. It does work for both but if you go down this road you will need resources for USA and Europe searches etc. you can get this from genealogy online, a book by Elizabeth Crowe found on easily on ebay for no more than £1.”
This final point does answer one of the big drawbacks of Roots Detective: if you live in Scotland, Europe or the USA, the recommended websites in the manual won’t be applicable – they focus on English geneology.
But the business model works on a global basis. You just need to find extra books like the one recommended above.
However, for ye English types, it’s really, really straightforward.
What you get
The manual explains how to market your family tree service, find customers, and sell your wares.
It gives you sample adverts and suggests what prices to charge. It then gives you all the resources you need to knock up family trees, including:
1. Websites that do the research
2. Software that packages it together, ready to sell to customers.
There are also worked-through examples, showing you exactly how to go about this business from start to finish.
Yes, you’ll need to put a few hours in per week at least. But there are good potential rewards. You can get an estimated £95 for half-a-day’s work, £400 for a single job, or £600 for a week’s work.

By the way, doing family trees for paying customers really has been John Hamer’s part time sideline business for well over ten years. As you may know, his main interest is betting systems and internet publishing.
So this really is one where the writer “walks the walk”.
Lovely jubbly.
